Do you know about festivals of our country, India?
Well our country has many festivals depending on the tradition and culture.
Festivals in India pertain to different occasions such as welcoming of seasons, harvesting crops, advent of new year, birthdays of saints and great personalities, etc.
Let’s look at a few of them.
- Eid-ul-Fitr
This auspicious festival is celebrated by Muslims to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadhan. After the month of fasting during Ramadhan, Muslims break their fast on this day. The festivals date depends on the sighting of the new moon. After offering prayers in the in the mosque, Muslims arrange social gatherings. The gatherings are meant for exchanging wishes and gifts with near and dear ones. Festive meals follow these gatherings.
- Diwali
The word Diwali means rows of diyas (clay lamps). This festival is celebrated to honour the return of Lord Ram to his kingdom, Ayodhya, after 14 years of exile (deportation). It marks the victory of divine forces over wicked forces. During Diwali, houses are decorated with colours, lights, diyas, etc. New clothes, firecrackers and a variety of sweets are extanged among family and friends. Lord Laxmi is also worshipped during Diwali for wealth and prosperity. It is a five day festival in which Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dhooj are celebrated one after the other.
- Dussehra
Dussehra celebrates the victory of good over evil. This festival is celebrated by performing music, dance and a drama called Ramlila. An effigy (model) of Ravan is burnt at the end to mark the victory of Lord Ram. In many parts of the country, this day is celebrated by worshipping Goddess Durga. Therefore it is also known as Vijaydasami.
- Guru Nanak Jayanti
This festival is celebrates the birth anniversary of the first guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak. The holy book of the Sikhs called Guru Granth Sahib is read without a break (Akhand path) from the beginning to the end, during this festival. The Guru Granth Sahib is decorated with flowers and carried throughout the city.
- Christmas
Christmas is celebrated on 25th December all over the world to honour the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas celebrations begin with midnight mass prayers offered in the church. Carols are sung, cakes and other dishes are prepared to celebrate Christmas. People decorate their homes with Christmas tree. They engage in friendly visits, organise feasts and exchange greetings and gifts.
- Onam
Onam is celebrated to honour the homecoming of a Mythical Demon King Mahabali. People make a carpet of flowers which is also called ‘Pookalam’ and lay it in front of their house to welcome the king. People perform traditional dances, play games and music. Several traditional rituals like snake boat races are organised along with a nine course meal called Onasadya.
